MLK Events In Louisville

Have the day off tomorrow? Consider checking out one (or some) of these events!

Community Celebration

The 26th Annual Community-wide King Celebration will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 S. Fifth St. Deacon James R. Turner will speak on "Life and Dignity of the Human Person." The Archdiocesan Gospel Choir will perform.

University of Louisville Concert

The legacy of King will be celebrated at 1 p.m. at Comstock Concert Hall, University of Louisville School of Music, First Street and Brandeis Avenue. Activities include a performance of "Trouble Don't Last Always"; discussions related to civil rights; special recognition of the Louisville chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and music by the Black Diamond Choir. The keynote speaker is Tonea Stewart, actress and dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Alabama State University. Free.

Ali celebration

The Muhammad Ali Center, 144 N. Sixth St., will celebrate Muhammad Ali's 69th birthday and the King holiday with reduced admission prices and events. In commemoration of King Day, his "I Have a Dream" speech will be shown all day, on the hour, beginning at 10 a.m. for free. Adult admission will be $2, and children 12 years and under will be admitted for free. Visitors have the opportunity to tour exhibits for free if they bring a cell phone for recycling. 'Education is King'

Simmons College of Kentucky and the University of Louisville will co-host "Education is King" at 7 p.m. at St. Stephen Church, 1018 S. 15th St. Planned speakers are Dr. Kevin Cosby, president of Simmons College, and Dr. James Ramsey, president of the University of Louisville, along with Gov. Steve Beshear and Mayor Greg Fischer. During the event, the inaugural "Charles H. Parrish Jr. Achievement Award" will be given to Humana Inc. co-founder David Jones Jr. The award is named for the first African-American professor at the University of Louisville and the first to teach at a white institution in the South. Tickets are required but they are free and can be picked up at Simmons College of Kentucky, 1018 S. Seventh St.


Day of Service

University of Louisville students, faculty and staff will help local nonprofit agencies. Their services will include playing games with senior citizens and children, painting, mulching a playground and picking up trash. The effort kicks off at U of L at 10:30 a.m. in Bigelow Hall, Miller Information Technology Center, with check-in, T-shirt handouts and instructions. Most volunteers will work from noon to 3 p.m. before heading back to campus. Jeffersonville March/Motorcade

The City of Jeffersonville's Memorial March/Motorcade and Service will begin at 12:15 p.m. at Jeffersonville City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Court, for the motorcade. The memorial service will start at 1 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 240 Wall St. The Rev. Ida Easley, new pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church, will speak.
